Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Optionally, line a 9x9-inch baking dish with parchment paper and grease it.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together all the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, blend the melted butter, egg, and buttermilk until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined, creating a slightly lumpy batter.
  5. Pour half of the batter into the prepared dish and level it with a spatula.
  6. In a bowl, mix together the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour for the streusel filling, optionally adding chopped nuts.
  7. Sprinkle the streusel mixture evenly over the batter layer.
  8. Spread the remaining batter on top of the streusel, covering it completely.
