Description

Stovetop Chicken and Dumplings is a cozy and comforting dish perfect for any occasion, featuring tender chicken and fluffy dumplings in a savory broth.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup milk (for dumplings)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, combine the chicken broth, carrots, celery, onion, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
  2. Stir in the shredded chicken and frozen peas, and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the melted butter and 3/4 cup of milk, stirring until just combined to form a dough.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling mixture into the simmering chicken mixture. Cover the pot and let the dumplings cook for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  5. After 15 minutes, check the dumplings for doneness; they should be fluffy and cooked through. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, add 1/2 cup of heavy cream to the chicken mixture before adding the dumplings.
  • You can substitute the chicken with cooked turkey for a delicious post-holiday meal option.
