Description

Savory French Onion Sausage Rolls are a delicious treat made with ground sausage and sautéed onions, wrapped in flaky puff pastry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground sausage (Italian or breakfast sausage)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package (1 sheet) puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and add the chopped onion. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the ground sausage with the sautéed onion mixture. Mix until well combined.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to smooth out any creases. Cut the pastry into rectangles, approximately 4 inches by 6 inches.
  6. Place a generous tablespoon of the sausage mixture along one edge of each pastry rectangle. If using, sprinkle a little mozzarella cheese on top of the sausage mixture.
  7. Roll the pastry over the filling to create a log shape, sealing the edges with a fork.
  8. Place the rolls seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg to give them a golden color while baking.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  11. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicy kick, add a teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the sausage mixture.
  • To make these rolls vegetarian, substitute the sausage with a plant-based sausage alternative and ensure the puff pastry is vegan-friendly.
