- 12 large cremini or button mushrooms, stems removed
- 1 cup Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes. Mix until well combined.
- Place the mushroom caps on a baking sheet, hollow side up. Spoon the filling mixture into each mushroom cap, packing it slightly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute the Italian sausage with chopped bell peppers, onions, and olives.
- Experiment with different cheeses like cheddar or pepper jack for a unique flavor twist.
