Description

A delicious recipe for Southern Fried Shrimp that is sure to impress your guests with its crispy texture and flavorful seasoning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk and hot sauce (if using). Add the shrimp and let them marinate for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
  2. In another bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F.
  4. Remove the shrimp from the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off. Dredge each shrimp in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated.
  5. Carefully place the coated shrimp in the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Use a slotted spoon to remove the shrimp from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as cocktail sauce or remoulade.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, try adding 1/2 cup of cornmeal to the flour mixture.
  • For a spicy twist, toss the fried shrimp in a mixture of melted butter and hot sauce before serving.
